STEIREN ( STIEREN,STURN, STERN??) , WAGNER, JOHANNA
Johanna Steiren was born in Hanover, Germany on 10-17-1844. She and her family
arrived in Galveston, Texas in late 1845 to early 1846 on the "Eberhardt" from
Salzedelfuhrt,Hanover. Her father listed as William, mother Antonette nee Gehrke,
siblings: Louise,Emma, Amalie, and Auguste. (ISTG Vol.3)departed from Bremen-9-17-1845.
In the 1850 Calhoun county census of old Indianola (pg. 487 family #59) shows
William Sturn,age 43, Geshave, 36, Louise 15, Ema, 13, Amelia, 11 Augusta,9
Johanie, 7 ( my great-grandmother) and Mena, 4 ( the only one born in Indianola).
Later in 1860 census Old Indianola, shows the girls living with a Gustus Sturm,
(no father there). Our family has always called her father by Henry so I am
assuming the name to be Wilhelm Heinrich or Heinrich Wilhelm. He was in the
shipping business from New Orleans to Galveston and Indianola.
Daniel Wagner,my great-grandfather, was a Union soldier in the 21st Iowa
Volunteers, he met Johanna and they married after the Civil War by a Union
chaplain in Indianola and moved to Dubuque, IA. Her family remained in
Texas and I would appreciate any information on her father and family. I
will be happy to share further information on this family line.
