During May and June, cactus blooms have turned into a "tuna" - the fruit of the cactus. Over the summer they will gradually ripen and turn a deep red. In addition to the green cactus leaves, tuna can be eaten - or fermented for the production of a cactus wine. This group is located on Magic Ridge and progress photos will be added as the fruit matures. (6/15/10)

Indianola Muscadine Grape

By early June, grapes from the native Mustang grapevine (Vitis mustangensis0, that can be found growing wild in several areas of Indianola, are starting to ripen. Rootstock from Texas native grapevines once saved the vineyards of France from total destruction. Hundreds of thousands of Texas plants were shipped to France in the late 1800's. The French growers grafted their vines to the Texas rootstock that was resistant to a root eating insect that was killing their plants.
